On the Breadline è un progetto di ricerca – vincitore della IV ed. dell’Italian Council – è il risultato di un anno di lavoro, che ho sviluppato in quattro paesi: Serbia, Grecia, Turchia ed Italia, in cui ho deciso di delinere la “linea del pane”. La breadline è anche la linea di povertà̀ che ha inciso storie e narrazioni di questi paesi segnati dalle “rivolte del pane”. Ho cercato di far dialogare questi luoghi “caldi” per raccontare il nostro presente contemporaneo.
Il pane non rappresenta infatti solo il momento del convivio e del confronto tra genti diverse, ma è legato alle rivolte popolari che spesso sono state identificate nella storia come movimenti di protesta che hanno unito popolazioni diverse nel nome della giustizia e dell’uguaglianza sociale.
In questi posti la breadline è molto labile. La farina, il pane, la polvere di grano – sinonimo del denaro anche la pagnotta e la grana – è un valore e rappresenta culture millenarie e tradizioni diverse. Durante la ricerca, in ogni città, ho realizzato un’opera video insieme a dei cori composti da sole donne ed una performance accompagnata dal canto di protesta Bread & Roses, che trae origine da una frase di un discorso del 1912 di Rose Schneiderman, leader femminista socialista statunitense, declamato durante un importante sciopero di lavoratrici.

On the Breadline is a research project—and winner of the 4th edition of the Italian Council—that represents the result of a year of work developed across four countries: Serbia, Greece, Turkey, and Italy, where I chose to trace the “breadline.” The breadline is also the poverty line that has shaped stories and narratives in these countries marked by “bread riots.” I sought to create a dialogue between these “hot” locations to tell the story of our contemporary present.
Bread, in fact, represents not only a moment of sharing and interaction between different peoples but is also connected to popular uprisings historically recognized as protest movements that united diverse populations in the name of justice and social equality.
In these places, the breadline is very fragile. Flour, bread, and wheat dust—synonymous with money, as are the loaf and the “grana” (a slang term for money)—hold value and represent millennia-old cultures and diverse traditions. During the research, in each city, I created a video work together with all-female choirs and a performance accompanied by the protest song Bread & Roses, which originates from a 1912 speech by Rose Schneiderman, an American socialist feminist leader, delivered during a major women’s labor strike.
