On the Breadline è un progetto di ricerca – vincitore della IV ed. dell’Italian Council – è il risultato di un anno di lavoro, che ho sviluppato in quattro paesi: Serbia, Grecia, Turchia ed Italia, in cui ho deciso di delinere la “linea del pane”. La breadline è anche la linea di povertà che ha inciso storie e narrazioni di questi paesi segnati dalle “rivolte del pane”. Ho cercato di far dialogare questi luoghi “caldi” per raccontare il nostro presente contemporaneo.
Durante la ricerca, in ogni città, ho realizzato un’opera video insieme a dei cori composti da sole donne ed una performance accompagnata dal canto di protesta Bread & Roses, che trae origine da una frase di un discorso del 1912 di Rose Schneiderman, leader femminista socialista statunitense, declamato durante un importante sciopero di lavoratrici.
Un canto ogni volta diverso è stato tradotto nella lingua di origine dei paesi coinvolti. L’elemento del coro, così come quello del pane, sono essenziali in questo progetto perché diventano lo strumento per raccontare attraverso parole, suoni e immagini le rivolte sociali, politiche ed i sogni che sono nel DNA di ogni paese, in particolare dei paesi legati storicamente e geograficamente al Mediterraneo. Il lavoro finale è un’opera video girata in 4k a quattro canali, è entrata a far parte della collezione permanente delle opere multimediali dell’Istituto Centrale per la Grafica.

On the Breadline is a research project — winner of the 4th edition of the Italian Council — and the result of a year-long journey developed across four countries: Serbia, Greece, Turkey, and Italy. In this project, I set out to trace an imaginary “breadline,” a line that symbolically and historically unites these territories.
The term breadline also refers to the line of poverty, to those social fractures that have shaped the stories and narratives of these countries — places marked by the so-called “bread riots.” My aim was to create a dialogue between these politically and socially “hot” places, in order to tell a story about our contemporary present.
Throughout this research, in each city, I created a video work together with a choir composed exclusively of women, accompanied by a performance featuring the protest song Bread & Roses. This song originates from a 1912 speech by Rose Schneiderman, an American socialist feminist leader, delivered during a landmark women workers’ strike.
Each time, the song was reinterpreted and translated into the local language of the country where the action took place. The choir — like bread itself — becomes a central element of the project: both are tools for telling stories of resistance, social and political struggle, and dreams that belong to the DNA of every country, particularly those historically and geographically connected to the Mediterranean.
The final work is a four-channel 4K video installation, which has been acquired as part of the permanent multimedia collection of the Istituto Centrale per la Grafica.
