The Fox and the Wolf: Struggle for Power

The Struggle for power, the Fox and the Wolf è un lavoro di natura video girato nella Sala delle Conferenze Internazionali al Ministero degli Affari Esteri alla Farnesina. Nel filmato i ballerini di tango indossano due maschere di animali rispettivamente da lupo e da volpe. I due danzatori si muovono all’interno del perimetro del grande tavolo, dove si riuniscono solitamente i capi di stato in visita in Italia, con un atteggiamento quasi di sfida contendendosi in qualche modo lo spazio di azione del proprio potere.

La battaglia è quindi dichiarata e aperta, non solo tra i due sessi ma anche tra i due animali che come in un rituale di corteggiamento si fanno avanti alternandosi l’uno con l’altro e mostrando il meglio delle loro capacità seduttive e persuasive. Una voce accompagna questo duello, scandito da un audio che ne sottolinea la tensione, come se fosse una conferenza di natura scientifica vengono declinati linguisticamente il nome fox e wolf. Il testo volutamente in lingua inglese, anche qui a porre l’accento sul potere della lingua dominante per eccellenza, diventa il fil rouge di questo passo a due.

Così il Tango, ballo dove solitamente è l’uomo che porta e la donna asseconda i movimenti, si trasforma in qualcos’altro: ad un tratto è proprio la donna a condurre questo gioco delle parti tra maschile e femminile, tra bestialità e dominio, tra uno spazio pubblico e quello privato della relazione.

The Struggle for Power, The Fox and the Wolf is a video work shot in the Sala delle Conferenze Internazionali at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in La Farnesina. In the video, tango dancers wear animal masks, one of a wolf and one of a fox. The two dancers move within the perimeter of the large table, where heads of state typically meet during their visits to Italy, adopting an almost confrontational attitude as they vie for space and control over the expression of their power.
The battle is declared and open, not only between the two sexes but also between the two animals, who, like in a courtship ritual, take turns advancing, showing the best of their seductive and persuasive abilities. A voice accompanies this duel, underscored by an audio that highlights the tension, as if it were a scientific conference. The names “fox” and “wolf” are linguistically pronounced in the English language, once again emphasizing the power of the dominant language, which becomes the common thread of this duet.
Thus, the Tango—traditionally a dance where the man leads and the woman follows—transforms into something else: suddenly, it is the woman who leads this play of roles between masculine and feminine, between bestiality and dominance, between the public space and the private space of the relationship.
